Wednesday
Up this morning about 6, and packed and ready to leave about
7 am. These are going to be fairly light
days – about 7 hours of driving each day – until we head to Whidbey Island,
Washington next week.
No real traffic until we got to Phoenix, so we took Riggs
Road off from the freeway, and followed it around to run into Highway 60 (in SURPRISE! My very favorite name for a
town in Arizona!) Not a bad drive at
all, and we made excellent time. After a
bit, Rte 60 turned off and we were then on U.S. 93 heading northwest toward
Kingman. Got on the I-40 freeway about
10 miles east of Kingman, and then stopped for lunch (Arby’s) and gas
($2.19/gallon). On the other side of the
freeway, (fortunately!) was a very large just-rolled-on-its-side trailer (one
that is pulled behind a car) which was blocking all three lanes of traffic that
had come to a dead stop, with the backup extending about a mile or so. Certainly not the way to start a trip, that’s
for sure! So happy we were going west!
Outside of Kingman we got off the freeway on to continue on highway
93, which we took all the way past Hoover Dam and into Las Vegas. Actually, surprisingly, the traffic once we
got to Las Vegas Boulevard wasn’t bad at all!
We are on The Strip between Stratosphere and Circus Circus in Hilton Grand
Vacations resort. We were a bit
early, as I dropped R and the suitcase off at the front door and went to find
self-parking. No problem there, and I
was able to get the camera, the book bag and the carpet bag all into the hotel
in one piece!

We’re in Tower 1, Room 11605; 16th floor of a new
building! We’ve got a one-bedroom
apartment, which has lovely counters and appliances. Also a HUGE bathtub which I plan to use in
the morning. Settled in, and set up the
computer. R had been waiting for some
work from Keck (Hawaii telescopes) for the past week or so, and naturally, it
came in this morning. So, I settled down
for a spell with my book, and R began work on the next scheduling process,
which takes place this October.
About 5:30 pm we drove over to Treasure Island (free parking!) and went to their acclaimed buffet
for dinner. Not the largest assortment
of dishes, but excellent quality in all.
We both enjoyed ourselves, with special emphasis on the pulled pork,
roasted turkey, and orange chicken.
Along with the buffet, we received two free Keno tickets. Neither of us had the slightest idea what to
do with them, but fortunately they had instructions on the tables! R actually won $1, which I now have, and
though he said he had a quarter in his pocket that was burning a hole, as the
machines no longer take “real” money, he had to leave with is quarter intact!
Back to the hotel about 7:30 and R will be back to work as
soon as I finish up here! My plan is to
post both today and tomorrow’s blog tomorrow night – because we had forgotten
all about it, and hadn’t taken any pictures!
So! More tomorrow, as we make our
way across Nevada to Reno!
More later!
Much love,
m
